The 86th Vik Anze Chess Competition kicked off in the Netherlands with a thrilling start as Chinese chess player Wei Yi defeated world runner-up Nepomniach in the ninth round of the masters group.

Held in The Hague, the competition saw Wei Yi strategically outmaneuver his opponent, deliberately avoiding the Russian defense commonly used by Nepomniach. Seizing the opportunity to break through from the center, Wei Yi emerged victorious, ultimately forcing Nepomniach to surrender in the 41st round.

German chess player Donchenko also made an upset, defeating French chess player Firogia with white. Iranian chess player Masudru, who had been struggling, tasted victory for the first time in the competition, defeating the host player Womedan.

As the first nine rounds concluded, Abdulsatlov, Giri, Gukesh, and Pragnananda emerged in the top group of the standings with 5.5 points each. Wei Yi, Vidit, and Firoja closely followed with 5 points. Nepomniach held 4.5 points, while Ding Liren and Wommerdan scored 4 points. Ju Wenjun, Masudru, and Donchenko accumulated 3.5 points, and Jordan Van Forest scored 3 points.
