[NTDTV, Beijing time, January 28, 2022]The government of the Republic of China has announced that it will not send officials to attend the Beijing Winter Olympics, but athletes will participate as normal. Taiwan officials are debating whether athletes should attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics for fear of being dwarfed by the Chinese Communist Party.

The Beijing Winter Olympics will begin on February 4. The Voice of America reported that three female and one male Taiwanese team members have qualified for alpine skiing, sledding and speed skating, and will compete under the team name of “Chinese Taipei”. Taiwan’s entries and female lineup this year are the best in history.

However, whether Taiwanese athletes will attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics is still inconclusive. The Mainland Affairs Council of the Republic of China responded at a regular press conference on the 27th that Taiwan will follow the usual practice and will not send officials to participate, but whether to boycott the opening and closing ceremonies will be explained by the Sports Administration after an overall careful assessment.

The Taiwan Affairs Office of the Chinese Communist Party called the Taiwan delegation “Chinese Taipei” on January 26. Taiwanese public opinion feared that the CCP would use the title to undervalue Taiwan at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics. During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the CCP complied with the Hong Kong agreement and referred to the Taiwan team as “Chinese Taipei”. But 14 years later the situation has changed.

Although the MAC has not made it clear whether it will boycott the opening and closing ceremonies, two DPP legislators gave an affirmative answer when interviewed by Radio Free Asia.

Legislator Lin Junxian said that Taiwan will not participate in the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in response to the international community’s protest against the CCP’s persecution of human rights.

Legislator Wang Dingyu made it clear that the Sports Department has decided not to participate in the opening and closing ceremonies. In addition, all team members and officials will not attend the Winter Olympics with the delegation.

Wang Dingyu said that before the Winter Olympics started, the CCP called the contestants “Taiwan, China” and began to “eat Taiwanese tofu” through politics. Therefore, it was the correct decision for the Taiwan delegation not to participate in the opening and closing ceremonies.

However, Cai Cijue, vice chairman of the Chinese Olympic Games, still said that whether to attend the opening and closing ceremonies is still under evaluation, and the situation in the Taiwan Strait is changing rapidly, and relevant decisions may be changed at any time before the start of the competition. Cai Cijue said that the Chinese Olympic Games will always pay attention to the final decision of the official.
