Before the European Championship qualifier against Iceland, the German national players set an example during the warm-up and draw attention to the “Gender Care Gap”. A sponsor waives his rights for the promotion.

After the arduous victory in Austria (3:2), the German national team takes on Iceland (6:10 p.m., ZDF) for their second European Championship qualifier. Before the game in Aachen, the women warmed up in unusual jerseys. The name of the sponsor “Vorwerk” was not emblazoned on the shirts as usual, but rather the numbers 2:57 and 4:16.

The German Football Association (DFB) not only wants to win against Iceland, but also wants to send a socio-political signal. Under the motto “It’s time,” the DFB wants to draw attention to the “Gender Care Gap,” i.e. the unequal distribution of care work between women and men in society.

While women spend an average of 4:16 hours per day on care work (looking after children), according to the Federal Statistical Office, men only spend 2:57 hours. Women spend an average of 30 hours a week doing unpaid work, while men spend just under 21 hours.

“National players want to draw attention to socially relevant issues”

“Our national players don’t just set role models on the pitch. Even off the pitch, it is important to them to draw attention to socially relevant issues and, as is now the case during the international match in Aachen, to set a common example,” said DFB Vice President Sabine Mammitzsch.

During the game, however, the women wear their traditional jerseys again. Bibiane Schulze Solano from Athletic Bilbao makes her starting eleven debut for the national team against Iceland. “She showed in the second half that she fits in there,” said national coach Horst Hrubesch. He also doesn’t have that many left-footed players in the defense center. “It’s an honor to be able to play from the start,” said Schulze Solano. She wants to play her game, play simple balls and stay calm, “that’s my job.”
