A video by MrBeast made 250 thousand dollars on Twitter, but there is a but (indeed: there are two)

Elon Musk e lo youtuber MrBeast (who is?) they are friends. Almost friends. Or at least enough friends for the first to promise to leave Twitter for the second if he were to “die under mysterious circumstances”but not enough for the latter to avoid criticizing the former on his entrepreneurial choices.

A fine 2023, Jimmy Donaldson (MrBeast’s real name) publicly complained to Musk about video monetization practices on even if they got a billion views on XI wouldn’t get even a fraction of that money back – he tweeted – I’m still willing to give it a try once monetization really gets underway!”.

250 thousand dollars and 2 doubts

In recent days, MrBeast has kept its promise: on January 16 he reposted on Twitter an old video of his already shared on YouTube (a great video, like many of those produced by him), which has collected over 160 million views and allowed him to gross over 250 thousand dollars. A surprising result for Donaldson himself, who shared his amazement in a tweet.

Doing though some clarifications and putting some effort into explaining that other creators are unlikely to be able to achieve similar results in the short term. Why? First of all, because he is MrBeast, he is the most followed person in the world on YouTube and on Twitter alone he has 27 million followers. Enjoys a visibility that few others can benefit from. For the same reason, as he himself wrote, “advertisers saw the attention he was receiving (the video and the controversy with Musk, ed.) and bought advertising space on my video”, which probably allowed him to have an RPM (things?) higher of what should have been.

There is another unclear aspect in this story. And it’s obviously linked to Musk’s work: more sites (Mashable, for example) reported that Twitter would have pushed the MrBeast video, showing it to more people and therefore artificially increasing the views. Musk denied this happened, but he also did not respond to MrBeast’s questions about how long it takes for a video to count as seen: a quick visit to the feed is enough of anyone, or is a minimum number of seconds required?

I am questions that will probably remain unansweredwhat is certain is that Musk needs videos like these to work and be profitable for those who make them: with the value of Twitter that continues to fall, investors and companies on the run and shareholders demanding explanations, the volcanic entrepreneur needs to demonstrate that his platform is a place where creators can earn money. The idea is to convince them to abandon YouTube. Which is a bit the same idea that TikTok hasbut that’s another story.
