It doesn’t just stop with an iPhone ban: China no longer wants to see chips from Intel and AMD in government computers. They should be replaced by local alternatives. Microsoft Windows and foreign database software are also on the hit list.
Intel, AMD, Microsoft: China makes short work of it
After iPhones have already been removed from many Chinese government offices, the government is taking further action. Chips from Intel and AMD should no longer be used in government computers and servers can be used. Instead, more local alternatives should be used. Microsoft’s Windows and database software from abroad are also affected as China focuses on promoting domestic software.
The measure was already decided in December 2023 and is now reportedly being implemented. Only technologies classified as “safe and reliable” should be procured – a category in which now Only Chinese products listed are. State-owned companies are also expected to switch completely to local providers by 2027.
Intel and AMD in particular, which are among the largest chip manufacturers in the world, are likely to benefit from the change significant losses in one of their most important markets suffer.
