Greentech: Efficient weather forecasts and climate projections – ICON model becomes open source

The numerical model ICON enables efficient weather forecasts and climate projections. With ICON-ART, KIT has expanded the system with a component to investigate how greenhouse gas emissions and dust clouds from Sahara storms spread or how ash and other aerosols from volcanic eruptions affect the weather and climate.

The model is now available to the public under an open source license and is intended to contribute to greater transparency in science.

“The open source status makes the model accessible to a broader scientific and user community,” says Professor Corinna Hoose from the KIT Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research Tropospheric Research.

“This makes it easier to further improve ICON for environmental predictions together with ICON partners, users and developers from around the world and to expand the capabilities of the model.”

ICON uses a three-dimensional computer simulation to calculate changes in the atmosphere and climate for the next few hours and days, as well as climate simulations for the next decades to centuries. It is used in Germany and Switzerland for operational weather forecasting.

ICON-ART enables the prediction of aerosols and atmospheric chemistry and their interaction with the atmosphere. Aerosols and chemical composition determine air quality and influence solar radiation, clouds and precipitation. The German Weather Service (DWD) uses ICON-ART for operational forecasts of mineral dust and pollen, which is important, for example, for planning photovoltaic yields or health.
