An official answer comes from Google support documents, which explain that it is possible Transfer ownership of a Google Drive file directly from the Drive app or from the file UI itself. In the first case, you simply have to open Drive, locate the document and click on it with the right mouse button. After that, you will have to click on “Share” and, after entering the recipient’s name, you will have to click on the downward arrow next to the latter: from the list of options, then, just click on “Transfer Ownership” and send the document.

The procedure is very similar if you find the file to share open in front of you in Sheets, Slides or Google Docs: in the top right corner of the document you will have to click on Share, enter the recipient and, again using the downward arrow to the right of the name, click on “Transfer Ownership”, to then send the document. From here, you can also cancel a file transferassuming the new owner has not already accepted it.

However, if a file has been sent to you and you need to accept or refuse ownership, the process is simple: every time you receive a document, an email will be sent to the address connected to your account, in which you will have the possibility to accept or reject the file. If you have lost the email message, however, just open Drive e type “pendingowner:me” in the search bar: all documents awaiting acceptance will appear. Select the one you are interested in with the right button, click on Share and then on “Accept” or “Reject”. Simple, right?
