Huawei isn’t ditching old phones: 7 devices get brand new software update

Huawei keeps bringing new smartphones onto the market and has recently enjoyed great success. But the older models are not forgotten. The Chinese company has now released the latest software update for seven old smartphones. There are two catches to the story, however.

Huawei updates seven older smartphones

Huawei recently surprised people when, without much warning, a software update was released for three old smartphones in Germany that improved communication. Huawei is now working on the next major software update, which will affect a total of seven smartphones. This time it’s about the January update, which is coming soon to be released for the following models that use HarmonyOS:

Huawei P30
Huawei P30 Pro
Huawei Mate 20
Huawei Mate 20 Pro
Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design
Huawei Mate 20X
Huawei Mate 20X 5G

But there are two catches. On the one hand, it is a closed test for 2,000 users who register for it. On the other hand, HarmonyOS does not run on the smartphones mentioned above in Germany. In this country, smartphones are still equipped with EMUI and receive software updates much less frequently. There haven’t been any updates to the security level for ages (source: HuaweiCentral).

Accordingly, Huawei is definitely to be praised because, at least in China, the old smartphones are still kept up to date. But for German customerswho still use the cell phones, the effort achieves nothingbecause it doesn’t reach here and the devices remain outdated.

Huawei focuses on China

Huawei has been under a US ban since 2019. Just a few months ago, the company achieved such a major technological breakthrough with the Mate 60 Pro that there are no longer any cuts in hardware. A Kirin chip is used again and a Chinese 5G modem is installed. But all of this is only limited to China. There are no new Huawei smartphones in Germany and software support is likely to be limited in the future.
