Linux Kernel: Security warning about several IT vulnerabilities

A security warning issued for the Linux kernel has received an update from the BSI. You can find out what affected users can do here.

The Federal Office for Security in Information Technology (BSI) released an update on May 1st, 2024 to a security hole with several vulnerabilities for the Linux kernel that became known on March 4th, 2024. The security vulnerability affects the Linux operating system as well as the products Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux and Open Source Linux Kernel.

The latest manufacturer recommendations regarding updates, workarounds and security patches for this vulnerability can be found here: SUSE Security Update SUSE-SU-2024:1480-1 (As of April 30, 2024). Other useful links are listed later in this article.

Multiple vulnerabilities for Linux kernel – Risk: medium

Risk level: 3 (medium)
CVSS Base Score: 6,6
CVSS Temporal Score: 5,8
Remote attack: No

The Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) is used to assess the vulnerability of computer systems. The CVSS standard makes it possible to compare potential or actual security vulnerabilities based on various criteria in order to better prioritize countermeasures. The attributes “none”, “low”, “medium”, “high” and “critical” are used to determine the severity levels of a vulnerability. The Base Score evaluates the requirements for an attack (including authentication, complexity, privileges, user interaction) and its consequences. With the temporal score, framework conditions that can change over time are taken into account in the evaluation. According to the CVSS, the risk of the current vulnerability is classified as “medium” with a base score of 6.6.

Linux Kernel Bug: Vulnerabilities and CVE Numbers

The kernel represents the core of the Linux operating system.

A local attacker can exploit multiple vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel to cause a denial of service or conduct an unspecified attack.

The vulnerabilities were classified by individual serial numbers using the CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) referencing system CVE-2021-47082, CVE-2021-47083, CVE-2021-47084, CVE-2021-47085, CVE-2021-47086, CVE-2021-47087, CVE-2021-47088, CVE-2021-47089, CVE-2021-47090, CVE-2021-47091, CVE-2021-47092, CVE-2021-47093, CVE-2021-47094, CVE-2021-47095, CVE-2021-47096, CVE-2021-47097, CVE-2021-47098, CVE-2021-47099, CVE-2021-47100, CVE-2021-47101, CVE-2021-47102, CVE-2021-47103, CVE-2021-47104, CVE-2021-47105, CVE-2021-47106, CVE-2021-47107 und CVE-2021-47108.

General measures for dealing with IT security gaps

Users of the affected systems should keep them up to date. When security gaps become known, manufacturers are required to fix them as quickly as possible by developing a patch or a workaround. If security patches are available, install them promptly. For information, consult the sources listed in the next section. These often contain further information about the latest version of the software in question as well as the availability of security patches or information about workarounds. If you have any further questions or uncertainties, please contact your responsible administrator. IT security managers should regularly check when the IT security warning Affected manufacturers provide a new security update.
