Portuguese charging station startup raises 100 million euros

The race for ever more comprehensive charging networks for electric cars in Europe continues: After the French company Electra raised 304 million euros for the expansion, the Portuguese startup Powerdot is now following up and announcing its latest round of financing of a whopping 100 million euros. The financing round is led by existing investors Antin Infrastructure Partners from France and the Arié Group.

The significant investment follows Powerdot’s exceptional growth in 2023, which was marked by a 201% increase in operational charging points and a 218% increase in kWh consumption. Currently, Powerdot has more than 5,000 active charging points in over 1,300 locations and plans to install almost 10,000 charging points in 1,400 locations.

Expansion in France, Spain, Belgium and Poland

In its home market of Portugal, Powerdot has become a reference for partners and users, with over 1,300 operational charging points. Likewise, Powerdot has a strong presence in France with over 3,700 operational charging points, representing a remarkable 500% annual growth in kWh consumption. In Spain, Powerdot activated over 300 charging points in 2023 alone, indicating significant progress in market penetration. In addition, Powerdot is expanding its presence in Belgium and Poland with strategic partnerships and ambitious expansion plans.

Powerdot launched in Portugal in 2018 and has grown to become the largest independent operator of charging points for electric cars there. In 2022, a large financing round of EUR 150 million came from Antin Infrastructure Partners, and since then it has continued to be expanded significantly. The strategy is to place the charging stations in cooperation with supermarkets, shopping centers or hotels – where there are heavily frequented spaces.
