Moonlock Security Researchers Discover Malicious “GTA 6” Malware Targeting Mac Users

Are you eagerly anticipating the release of “Grand Theft Auto VI” (GTA 6)? Well, be cautious as Moonlock security researchers have uncovered a dangerous malware posing as a file for the highly anticipated game. This malicious program targets macOS users and is designed to steal sensitive personal information.

The malware, discovered by Moonlock, is a variant of Password Stealing Software (PSW), a type of Trojan malware that focuses on collecting login names and passwords from infected computers. It is transmitted to criminals through remote connections or emails.

The deceptive malware disguises itself as a copy of “GTA 6” or a pirated version of Notion, using social engineering tactics to trick victims into downloading it. Once installed, the malware is able to extract passwords from the user’s local keychain and other sensitive information.

While macOS is equipped with security features like Gatekeeper to prevent users from downloading unsigned applications that may contain malware, criminals are able to bypass these mechanisms by instructing users to override the security function.

Once executed, the malware releases a payload that bypasses the file system and executes directly from application memory. It then proceeds to search for valuable data from popular web browsers, macOS keychain databases, and even cryptocurrency wallets.

Researchers warn users to stay vigilant and exercise caution when downloading non-App Store applications. It’s important to keep devices and applications up to date to protect against the latest threats and vulnerabilities.
