The Eurovision 2024 rules: how does it work, who votes, AutoTune yes or no?
The first two evenings, named semi-finalswill take place on Tuesday 7 and Thursday 9 May and will feature performances 31 artists (15 on the first evening and 16 on the second) representing as many countries. The remaining 6, traditionally named Big Five + the host country, they have instead direct access to the final on Saturday 13 May. The final is traditionally called Grand Final.
I Big Five sono: Italy, France, Germany, United Kingdom and Spain. To these is added the Swedenwhich as host nation also has direct access to the Grand Final.
The 10 most rated songs by each semi-final they will join the Big Five + Sweden, to complete the roster of 26 artists who will compete for the victory of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. The regulation allows (or rather encourages) performances in half-playback (i.e. recorded backing track and live vocals).
The first big news, however, arrives on the front Autotune: This year, for the first time, the Eurovision Song Contest will accept the use of pitch correction and autotuning toolsprovided that these are used as artistic choice (therefore as a vocal effect and not to fill any performance gaps).
Who votes in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024?
The format of the regulation resumes that of last year. This means that during the semi-finals only the public at home will vote (SMS and official Eurovision app), while the juries of the individual countries will also count for the final. Televoting is global: it will be possible to vote via app even in countries that do not actively participate in the race (example: the United States).
However, the ban on self-voting at all stages (Italians will not be able to vote for Angelina Mango) and the vote in the semi-final remains exclusive for their own evening (e.g. Portugal, competing in the first semi-final, will not be able to vote in the second).
The Big Five + Sweden instead share the right to vote for the semi-finals: Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom will vote for the semi-final on May 7th, while Italy, Spain and France for the one on the 9th.

If all this seems complex to you, wait until you find out how the national juries vote, which this year will only express their opinions in the Grand Final.
The national juries are made up of experts from each competing country. Each of these will have to draw up a ranking of the 10 songs that you appreciated the most. Based on this ranking, scores will be assigned to the individual artists (12 points for first place, 10 for second and scaling up to 1 for tenth). In the Grand Final the sum of all national jurors will be worth 50%adding to the remaining 50% of the televoting.
By what criteria are the Big 5 established? Why is Italy already in the final?
The choice of the Big 5 has very little that is artistic or musical. The reasons are purely economic. Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain and Germany are the countries that contribute most to the coffers of the Eurovision organization, which is why they have direct access to the Grand Final.
The same goes for the Swedenwhich as host nation (and winner of the last edition) will enjoy the same privilege.
The Eurovision 2024 semi-finals schedule: who performs and when?
In looking at the semi-final lineups we discover the first big news of this edition: the Big 5 + Sweden will also perform during the semi-finals (although out of the running, as they have already qualified for the final). The guests of the 2024 edition
As you surely know, by tradition the organization of the event is the responsibility of the country holding the title of winner. Last year the powerful voice of of flowers has guaranteed Sweden the right to host Eurovision 2024, which will in fact take place in Malmƶ.
Among the guests ā what are called interval acts ā we will find the young man Benjamin Ingrosso (who had already represented Sweden at Eurovision 2018); Helena Paparizou (Greek singer winner of Eurovision 2005); Sertab Erener (Turkish singer winner of Eurovision 2003) e Charlotte Perrelli (winner of the 1999 edition representing Sweden).
It is worth remembering that 2024 will mark 50 years since the historic Eurovision victory of the ABBA. Despite this, although we will certainly witness a moment that will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Waterloo, we are surprised that the Swedish organization did not announce the band as guests (especially in light of the groupās recent reunion). Could there be a surprise in store for the final?
