Many vegans and vegetarians do not eat meat out of conviction, but still like the taste of meat. That’s why meat substitute products are becoming increasingly popular in Germany – according to the latest figures from the Federal Statistical Office

Meat substitutes are products that look and taste like meat, but are made from plant-based foods.

Comparatively few meat alternatives are currently being sold, but as consumption of real meat is falling, the curves could come together more quickly than previously assumed.

More and more veggie burgers

Meat consumption in Germany remains enormous, but continues to decline. The question now arises as to whether this development is due to people’s growing awareness of animal suffering and our environment or to the high prices for meat.

From 2022 to 2023, manufacturers produced 16.6% more meat alternatives such as veggie burgers etc.

Declining meat consumption

In 2023, 121,600 tons of meat substitute products were produced. A profit of 583.2 million euros was achieved. Real meat made a profit of €44.8 billion in the same year, about 80 times more than substitutes. According to the Federal Information Center for Agriculture (BZL), 58.8 kilograms of meat was consumed per capita in Germany in 2019. In 2024 the number will only be 51.6 kilograms per capita.

In five years, our meat consumption in Germany has fallen by almost 12 percent.
