If the switch off to DVB-T2 of Rai channels has been postponed, the new technology for digital television is arriving in Italy. This is DVB-I, or Digital Video Broadcasting over IP, a new standard approved by ETSI in 2020 and which is preparing to arrive in our country.
Open source, DVB-I represents a unified solution** for the reproduction of television content, regardless of the mode of use: whether satellite, terrestrial or via the internet.
For users, the option is given to access many channels and services are free which for a fee through a single interface allows you to access the contents from any device connected to the internet, including smartphones, tablets and PCs.
For the Italian audiovisual market it could represent a real revolution, and in fact various broadcasters such as Mediaset have already started testing with some experiments that allow access to streaming of some channels in streaming with low latency and in 4K.
It is not clear what intentions Rai and Sky have, but apparently they are evaluating the opportunity.
As reported by colleagues at Digital-News, however, a sticker and a labeling system for televisions compliant with this standard is also on the way.
