Support for Windows Server 2012 (and R2) actually expired in mid-October 2023. However, customers can purchase further updates – until 2026.
If Microsoft followed its original plan, Windows Server 2012 would no longer be supported as of October 10, 2023. However, there are many enterprise customers who apparently still need some time to make the switch. That’s why support for Windows Server 2012 has been extended for another three years. The new end date is now October 13, 2026
During this time, the operating system only receives essential security updates that are intended to reduce known security risks. The Extended Security Updates (ESU) also apply to Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Embedded Server on Azure. “You can now receive three more years of ESUs”, writes Microsoft in the announcement. Like previous extended updates, they are not offered for free in most situations.
Buy individual update years
Instead, Microsoft offers special ESU keys that are purchased within the Microsoft 365 admin center. Customers always receive one year of extended support, so they have to purchase a total of three times for the full three-year extension. According to Microsoft, this does not apply to Windows Server 2012, which is hosted on Azure servers. Such customers should receive the updates free of charge.
Customers who opt for an Extended Security Update must first bring their operating system up to date before installing it. Microsoft states that the August 2023 update KB50229368 is mandatory for Server 2012 R2 and Embedded Server 2012 R2. Windows Server 2012 should at least be updated to KB50229369, also from August 2012.

Customers can follow a full installation guide from Microsoft if they choose advanced security updates. From October 2026 onwards there will really be no more new updates for the server operating system.
