1 dead, 11 injured in massive wildfires in southwestern U.S.
The massive wildfires that have swept through the southwestern United States have killed at least one person and injured 11 by Sunday (24th). At present, the burned area has exceeded 48,600 hectares. Sanders, the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency coordinator, said the deceased was a retired state fire chief and the 11 injured were all firefighters.
Since last Friday (22nd), there have been fires in 12 counties in Nebraska. As of the evening of the 23rd, the fires in 5 counties were still not under control, and temporary evacuation orders were issued in many areas. The National Guard also deployed three helicopters to help put out the fire. The extent of the fire and how many buildings were damaged are not yet known.
In addition, New Mexico Governor Grisham declared a state of emergency for several counties on Sunday; a fire near Prescott, Arizona, has now burned more than 1,214 hectares.
