Bola.net – Senegal had to surrender to hosts Ivory Coast on penalties with a score of 1-1 (4-5) in the round of 16 match of the 2023 African Cup of Nations which was held at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium, Yamoussoukro, Tuesday (30/1/2024 ) early morning WIB.
The match had only been running for four minutes, Senegal had managed to open up the lead through the action of Habib Diallo. Starting from Sadio Mane’s crossing, Diallo controlled the ball and fired a volley which hit the Ivory Coast goal.
Ivory Coast tried to find an equalizer. However, a number of opportunities they created failed to be maximized into goals. Score 1-0 for Senegal’s advantage lasted until the end of the first half.
Returning from the dressing room, Ivory Coast increasingly pressed the Senegal defense more intensely. The hosts also received a penalty in the 84th minute after Edouard Mendy was judged to have violated Nicolas Pepe in the forbidden box.
Franck Kessie, who acted as executioner, successfully defeated Mendy. The 1-1 score lasted until the whistle sounded to signal the end of the second half. The match had to continue into extra time.
