2nd Bundesliga: St. Pauli misses promotion – defeat against HSV

When the final whistle sounded, all the dams in the “Volkspark Fortress” broke. Blue smoke rose above the north stand, and a banner with the inscription “The city belongs to us” distorted the situation in Hamburg. What counted for HSV and its fans was the snapshot. City Master!

St. Pauli with match point against Osnabrück

Thanks to a late header goal from Robert Glatzel in the 85th minute, the fourth-placed team in the 2nd Bundesliga defeated leaders FC St. Pauli 1-0 (0-0) – and thus avoided the ultimate humiliation that was the rise of their arch-rivals Volksparkstadion would have been. Glatzel later spoke of an “incredibly beautiful moment to score that goal in front of the north stand.”

St. Pauli, whose coach Fabian Hürzeler remains without a derby win, has the next, easier match point against bottom team VfL Osnabrück next Saturday. And HSV’s chance of reaching third place in the relegation zone is still small because Fortuna Düsseldorf won 3-1 against Nuremberg at the same time and is four points and 13 goals better.

Pack formation before kick-off

“If you don’t reach the boiling point here, you can quit.” Steffen Baumgart said that well before kick-off. Even the HSV coach probably didn’t think about forming a pack during the warm-up. Players and staff from both teams clashed at the halfway line. City derby! Fire! Emotions!

Speaking of fire: It took less than three minutes before referee Matthias Jöllenbeck had to interrupt the Hamburg city derby for the first time. Clouds of smoke from the guest block obscured the view. The first shot on goal in front of 56,100 spectators was recorded by the waiting HSV, who had to do without Bakery Jatta. After a corner (8th), Immanuel Pherai tested Nikola Vasilj with a direct shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Duel picked up speed after 20 minutes

Otherwise, there was more music in the stands than on the field – until the 20th minute. The duel briefly picked up speed. Robert Glatzel’s attempt was cleared by Karol Mets in front of the line, and Vasilj scratched Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer’s follow-up shot from the corner.

Hamburger SV against FC St. Pauli

greater than greater than characters

Hamburger SV: Raab – Reis, Hadzikadunic, Schonlau, Muheim – Meffert (86. van der Brempt), Poreba (71. Suhonen), Pherai – Königsdörffer (86. Okugawa), Glatzel (90.+3 Nemeth), Dompé (90 .+3 Öztunali)
FC St. Pauli: Vasilj – Nemeth, Wahl, Mets – Saliakas, Irvine, Kemlein (86. Ritzka), Metcalfe (86. Saad) – Afolayan (89. Albers), J. Eggestein (78. Amenyido), Hartel
Referee: Jöllenbeck (Freiburg) – Spectators: 56,100 (sold out)
Goal: 1-0 Glatzel (85th) – Yellow-red card: Saliakas (90th + 7th)
Particular incident: Vasilj saves a penalty from Reis (90.+7)

Shortly afterwards (24th) emotions ran high. Glatzel had taken the lead for HSV, but Jöllenbeck decided without viewing the video images that the striker was fouled in the running duel with Manolis Saliakas – a controversial and hotly debated decision. The wrong offside whistle from Aljoscha Kemlein (27′) when the Kiezkickers had a huge chance was of no consequence because Kemlein missed in a slapstick manner.
In the parallel game, Düsseldorf increased the pressure on HSV against Nuremberg in the fight for the relegation place, which, in the person of Königsdörffer (35th), got stuck on the post from an acute angle.

Glatzel heads in to win

Miro Muheim picked up the first yellow card for a check on Oladapo Afolayan in what had been a fair game until then and now became more heated. Sebastian Schonlau attacked Afolayan with his leg outstretched, but escaped unpunished. Previously (41st), Johannes Eggestein had headed the ball next to the goal.
The second half was an uneventful quarter of an hour when Jöllenbeck came into focus again. Königsdörffer’s header was out of reach of keeper Vasilj because he was fouled in the air by Lukasz Poreba. However, the referee only realized this after the video evidence and took the goal back – much to the displeasure of the HSV supporters.

There were two culprits for the fact that there were hardly any highlights after the break: a host who lacked ideas and a guest who withdrew.

In the final phase, HSV intensified its efforts again. Königsdörffer hung on to Vasilj from a distance (77′), Pherai’s free kick (80′) hit the crossbar. And then Glatzel was there when he headed in a corner from Muheim for an celebrated victory. Ludovit Reis missed a penalty kick deep into added time. Vasilj parried.
