A separatist region of Moldova leans on Russia and worsens the conflict with the US-backed government

The United States has ratified its support for the sovereignty of Moldova following a statement made by pro-Russian separatists in Transnistria. The separatists expressed their desire to be under the protection of Moscow, sparking concerns about the region’s stability.

The tensions between Moldova and Transnistria date back to the early 1990s, when pro-Russian forces in Transnistria declared a separatist state. Despite efforts to formalize annexation, the region adopted its own currency and flag under the name of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. The Kremlin also deployed 1,500 soldiers as peacekeepers in the area.

Recent developments have brought the conflict back into the spotlight, as legislators in Transnistria called on the Russian Duma to defend the territory against Moldova’s economic pressures. Moldova imposed new customs tariffs on imports and exports from Transnistria as part of its path to join the European Union bloc, causing unrest in the region.

Alexander Korshunov, president of the Supreme Council of Transnistria, accused Moldova of using the economy as a tool of pressure and blackmail. He claimed that Moldova’s goal is to dismantle the statehood of Transnistria and harm its citizens’ well-being.

In response to the escalating tensions, the United States reiterated its support for Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The State Department called for both parties to work together to address the concerns of communities on both sides of the Dniester River.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned of the threat of Russian intervention in the region and urged for de-escalation to prevent further destabilization. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also emphasized the need for a peaceful solution to the crisis without external interference.
