Activision-Microsoft, this time it’s official: the EU antitrust approves the acquisition!

GAME INFORMATION

The rumors of Reuters on the approval of the Activision-Microsoft deal by the EU antitrust are confirmed in the document shared by the European Commission to endorse the deal worth about 70 billion dollars concocted by the Redmond house and the Call of Duty publisher .

The regulatory authorities of the European Union have thus decided to accept the ‘structural remedies’ proposed by the US technological giant for overcome the critical issues identified in areas such as cloud gaming.

In the documentation produced by the European Commission in charge of assessing the risks of monopoly and damage to competition (and to consumers), the regulatory authority of the Old Continent explains that “Microsoft would have no incentive to block the distribution of Activision video games on PlayStation platforms. But even if Microsoft decides to implement such a strategy in the future, however, there would be no significant damage to the competition and to the entire console market.

While giving its assent to what promises (or threatens?) to be ‘the gaming deal of the century’, the European antitrust underlines however that Microsoft must undertake to guarantee the distribution of Activision video games on PCs and consoles through cloud gaming. In this regard, the European Commission explains that the Redmond house will have to “allow players to stream Activision video games to any cloud gaming service of their choice. Cloud providers must also be offered a free license to stream Activision games in EU markets. Our decision represents an important step in this direction, as it allows users to access Activision video games on many more devices. Microsoft’s commitments will enable these games to be streamed on any streaming service for the first time ever, enhancing competition and growth opportunities.”.
