Women and information challenge the Taliban, the “new masters” of Afghanistan. “Today we resumed our broadcasts with the presenters,” writes Miraqa Popal, head of the Afghan network Tolo News in a tweet. And publishes a photo of a host with a veil. Then still more images and another tweet: “Our presenter is interviewing a Taliban media representative live in our studios.”
Women, notes the BBC, have been absent on the main Afghan channels since Kabul’s surrender to the Taliban on Sunday. On Twitter, applause for Tolo News, but there are also those who call for caution while waiting to understand the moves of the ‘heirs’ of the movement founded by Mullah Omar. Just yesterday Tolo News reported that the Taliban had entered its headquarters in the Afghan capital, promising guarantees for the safety of the compound.
