Mullah Yaqub emerged to the headlines in the months leading up to the announcement of the death of his father, Mullah Omar. For a period he was seen by many, within the movement and beyond, as a reformer who wanted to bring more transparency and above all to emancipate the Taliban from heavy Pakistani protection. Over the years, however, Yaqub has lost much of its original credibility.
