The accident involving a construction train at Hamburg Central Station has caused numerous train cancellations since Friday afternoon. S-Bahn traffic was even interrupted until Sunday.

The railway announced early on Sunday morning that the tracks affected by the clean-up work had been reopened for S-Bahn traffic. There are no longer any restrictions on regular traffic. It had previously been feared that the failures could last into the week because the rescue work for the train was difficult.

Seven people injured

After the train accident there was great chaos at Hamburg Central Station on Friday.

On Friday afternoon, the construction train was tilted under the Ernst Merck Bridge at the main station because its superstructure hit the ceiling of the bridge. According to the emergency services, seven people were injured in the accident, a 55-year-old worker was seriously injured. The fire department was on site with a large contingent of around 120 emergency services.

Long-distance and regional transport is also running again

Long-distance and regional traffic was also affected by the accident on Friday. The main station was closed to arrivals and departures for more than two hours. There were numerous delays. In addition, emergency services evacuated around 1,600 passengers from various trains that had to stop on the open route due to the traction power being switched off. As a result of the suspension of train services, thousands of passengers tried to switch to buses and cars. As a result, traffic came to a standstill around the Hamburg television tower and many buses were overcrowded.
