Alexandre de Moraes gives 48 hours to Jair Bolsonaro

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), granted 48 hours for former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to provide explanations about his two-day stay at the Hungarian embassy between February 12 and 14.

A report from The New York Times published this Monday (25) shows that the former president took shelter in the Hungarian embassy, in Brasília, shortly after calling supporters to an event on Avenida Paulista, in São Paulo, at the end of that month.

The visit to the embassy of the European country, currently led by far-right politician Viktor Orbán, took place four days after Bolsonaro had his passport seized by the Federal Police as part of the investigation into the attempted coup d’état.

The United States newspaper had access to footage from the embassy’s security cameras that show the former president arriving at the location on February 12, four days after the launch of the Tempus Veritatis operation that investigates the attempted coup d’état for Bolsonaro to remain in power in 2022.

After the report gained prominence throughout the Brazilian press, Bolsonaro’s lawyers released a note stating that he was at the embassy at the invitation to “maintain contacts with authorities from the friendly country”.

Developments

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested the presence of the Hungarian ambassador, Miklós Halmai, to provide explanations, demonstrating the Brazilian government’s dissatisfaction with the situation.

If Bolsonaro remained within the diplomatic mission, theoretically he could not be the target of an arrest order, since he would be in a building protected by diplomatic conventions.
