Alina Kabaeva, sanctions on Putin’s lover are ready but the US is holding them in place in the latest attempt to avoid escalation with the Russian president

The United States are holding back a package of sanctions, already prepared, against Alina Kabaeva, m the alleged new partner (or second wife) of Vladimir Putin, reveals the Wall Street Journal. The Treasury Department has prepared the package of sanctions against Ms. Kabaeva, measures that are however kept on standby for a reflex supplement by the National Security Council. The US Treasury declined to comment with the WSJ, but US officials said the action against Ms. Kabaeva is not off the table, and in short, we are thinking about it.

The belief among US officials who reported the matter to the media is that sanctioning Kabaeva would be seen as such a personal blow to Putin that it could further increase tensions between Russia and the United States. And so it was decided for a supplement of reflection.

US officials informed about Kabaeva’s movements spoke of two residences in Switzerland available to Kabaeva in recent years: one with high walls and a heliport in Cologny, near Geneva (US officials say that Putin’s associates did business there, arriving and departing in helicopter), and another in Lugano. La Stampa recently spoke about this second residence: after the birth of her first child, Mrs. Kabaeva spent most of her time in a luxury residence in Lugano, overlooking the city’s mountain lake.
