KUZNICA, (POLAND-BELARUS BORDER) – The youngest children, to protect themselves from the freezing frost, spent the night on the low branches of the black pines: on the ground, the fires lit with the trunks of the birch trees cut down by their fathers’ hatchets, a mockery gift from the Minsk military. However, fragile flames are no longer enough to heat the bodies of migrants who have been abandoned for days a few steps from the rolls of barbed wire: from the bush the cries of mothers now invoke only “water and bread”.
