The reportage of correspondent Lorenzo Cremonesi from Selydove. In the night between 14 and 15 February, the city was heavily bombed by the Russian army. The complex of buildings of a hospital was reduced to rubble: the toll was at least 4 civilian deaths, including a pregnant woman and a mother and her 15-year-old son. Not far from Selydove is Avdiivka, a key city of the Ukrainian resistance, fell into Russian hands today – Saturday 17 February. The lack of ammunition in the Ukrainian armories played a decisive role in precipitating the stalemate in which the two factions had been stuck since 2014. Among the ranks of Kiev’s soldiers – says Cremonesi – there is a climate of mistrust. The military criticized Zelensky’s decision to remove General Zaluzhny. With him the retreat would have been announced earlier, sparing the lives of many men, they claim. The newly appointed General Syrsky, however, of Soviet training, would be more inclined to sacrifice troops. Finally, the continually reiterated appeal to Europe: «Send weapons and ammunition: if we fall, you will be next. With more supplies we could have defended Avdiivka.”
