(Keystone-SDA) Fire broke out in two pigsties in Gossau SG on Wednesday evening. The police expected that hundreds of pigs in the stables would not survive. No people were injured. The material damage amounts to several hundred thousand francs.
The fire affected two stables containing a total of around 1,500 pigs. The fire brigade, which was deployed after 5.10 p.m., found part of the two stables fully ablaze, as the St. Gallen cantonal police announced on Wednesday evening. She suspected that the fire started in the larger of the two stables. The stable was completely burned out and the roof collapsed.
The second stable was not directly affected by the fire. However, heavy smoke drifted into the stable with the wind. The fire department’s vents initially brought fresh air. The power supply was then restored and with it the ventilation of the stable. According to police, the animals inside have a chance of survival.
The fire was under control as of 6 p.m. However, the extinguishing work continued into the evening while the fire department was busy with the demolition work.
