Austria falls behind in the UEFA 5-year ranking

It is now official:

Austria will finish this season in the UEFA 5-year rankings in 13th place at best, their worst performance in seven years.

Due to SK Sturm’s exit from the Europa Conference League (all information>>>), it is no longer possible to take a higher rank. Switzerland remains 12th for the time being, although it no longer has a representative in the international race, but ultimately did better by 0.375 points (the equivalent of a little less than an Austrian victory).

This means that not only will Austria no longer have a fixed place in the UEFA Champions League in 2025/26, but the cup winner or third place in the league will no longer start at least in the UEFA Conference League, but must first qualify for a main round.

The good news is that Austria can only go as low as 14th place this season; Only Greece can theoretically catch up with us. There is no difference between rank 13 and rank 14.

Austria only scored 4.8 points collectively this season and is only 22nd in the one-year ranking. The last time fewer points were scored was in 2015/16.

This is what the individual places bring:

12th place (season 2025/26):

  • Champions in the Champions League playoff (=fixed place in the Europa League)
  • Runner-up in qualifying round 2 of the Champions League
  • Cup winner (or league third) in the Europa League playoff (=fixed place in the Europa Conference League)
  • Third or fourth place in the league in qualifying round 2 of the Europa League
  • Fourth and fifth place in the league in qualifying round 2 of the Europa Conference League

  • Cup winner (or league third) in qualifying round 3 of the Europa League
  • Third or fourth place in the league in qualifying round 2 of the Europa Conference League
  • Fourth and fifth place in the league in qualifying round 2 of the Europa Conference League

14th place (season 2025/26):

  • Champions in the Champions League playoff (=fixed place in the Europa League)
  • Runner-up in qualifying round 2 of the Champions League
  • Cup winner (or league third) in qualifying round 3 of the Europa League
  • Third or fourth place in the league in qualifying round 2 of the Europa Conference League
  • Fourth and fifth place in the league in qualifying round 2 of the Europa Conference League
