Baby from Brazil saw a devil as a child and entered the ‘belly of God’; understand the singer’s conversion

Twenty-five years later, Baby do Brasil still remembers the exact moment of her conversion: “When I converted, it was when Jesus appeared to me. Everything that was ship, everything danced, because I met the Guy”, said the 71-year-old singer years in an interview with the Papagaio Falante podcast, in 2022.

The statement resurfaces after an unusual episode in the early hours of this Sunday (11). During a participation in Ivete Sangalo’s Trio Elétrico, in Salvador, Baby took the microphone and told the crowd that the apocalypse is coming and should happen between 5 and 10 years.

“Everyone pay attention because we are entering an apocalypse. The rapture has everything to happen between 5 and 10 years”, warned Baby, who in addition to being a singer is also a pastor.

A little shocked, Ivete Sangalo reacted with good humor: “I’m not going to let it happen, because there’s no apocalypse when we cheat on it.”

Although the speech surprised many people, Baby’s devotion is known. In the 2022 interview, she even trembled while talking about her 1999 rapture.

“I was taken to the third heaven, which Paul talks about in the Bible”, he said. “And I was shown to Jesus, to God, he is beautiful. I entered the belly of God, flying, and he told me that I was being generated again.”

In an interview with the program “Espelho”, on Canal Brasil, she gave more details: “Everything that was experienced, was experienced very intensely. My entry with the Lord was because I had very ‘Poltergeist’ things. Absurd things happened, especially because I was very interested in the spiritual side since I was little, I wanted to know”, he explains.

Baby claims to speak to God and have had visions since he was a child. She grew up in a Catholic family and says she was introduced to the devil when she was 8 years old. He stared at her at the foot of the bed. Her parents took her to a psychoanalyst, who prescribed medication. But she didn’t take them. “I heard from God that I wasn’t supposed to take it”, she recalled in an interview with Quem Magazine. “So, my father would give me the medication, I would pretend to take it and spit it out”, he remembers. Baby also said that she has been saved by angels on several occasions. “My head went like this ‘He’s seeing me all the time'”, she said .

The late conversion came in 1999, after a traumatic episode in which a man broke into her apartment in Rio. She asked God for a sign, who asked her for an hour a day for a month. Three days later, her personal doctor referred her to the Evangelical Church so that she could fulfill her “mission”

“He told me: ‘Baby, there are churches and churches’. Then I remembered how many times I was accused of everything I never did in my life, how many times I was accused of being the wife of the new Bahians… I’m playing the same role of all the accusers? What a shame!”, confesses the singer, who converted and is now a “popstora”. “I spent 14 years out of the market, studying everything you can imagine from the Scriptures”, she says. The relationship with the spiritual brought peace and happiness to Baby, according to her. “It fills me, it supplies me immediately. I am connected with the creator. I did my religare”, she says.

The only daughter of one of Rio’s first journalists and a public prosecutor, she immersed herself in the psychedelia of the 1970s, living in alternative communities such as the Novos Baianos site – a group of which she was a member and which marked MPB. In 1986, she and her then husband, Pepeu Gomes, guitarist for Novos Baianos, were barred from a Disney park due to their appearance being considered extravagant.

In an interview with Quem Magazine, Baby said that at the time of Novos Baiano he did not use any other drug besides marijuana. “At that time, marijuana played a role in preventing us from experiencing the density of what was happening. I don’t see marijuana anywhere in my head today. She doesn’t fit into anyone’s life,” she added.

Alcohol-free and gluten-free

Since the conversion, Baby has become a different person, he says. “I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t eat gluten,” she said. Evangelical, she started singing gospel. A career turnaround that, she claims, was not motivated by money.

“Every time I entered anything it was complete,” he told Canal Brasil. “So the gospel in my life is not a market gospel, so much so that no one could see me. I could have gone in and sold millions, but when I saw that this could happen, I held back. If I made that move, I would break with my truth “, he defends, telling his reasons.

Baby and Pepeu have six children: Sarah Sheeva, Zabelê, Nãna Shara, Pedro Baby, Khrisna Baby (the Xaxá) and Kriptus Baby (the Pitito). They all embarked on an artistic life.
