Biden appoints Caroline Kennedy as ambassador to Australia

WASHINGTON – The President Joe Biden he nominated Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the former president John F. Kennedy, US ambassador to Australia. The appointment of 64-year-old Kennedy, who has already served as ambassador to Japan between 2013 and 2017, highlights the emphasis placed by the Biden administration on relations with Australia, a central country in Washington’s strategy for the Indo-Pacific. with which the US and the United Kingdom recently signed the Aukus strategic agreement, which provides, among other things, for the supply of nuclear-powered submarines to Canberra.

During her tenure as ambassador to Japan, Kennedy played a central role in organizing historic events for bilateral relations, including the visit of the then US president. Barack Obama in Hiroshima, a city devastated by the first atomic bomb dropped on Japan in 1945, and by the Japanese premier Shinzo Abe at Pearl Harbor, site of the surprise attack carried out by the Japanese Navy which in 1941 started hostilities between the two countries in the context of the Second World War.

Last month Kennedy was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, a decoration founded by Emperor Meiji in 1875 and the first to be granted directly by the Japanese government.
