U.S. President Joe Biden has vowed to continue to evacuate those attempting to flee Afghanistan and punish the perpetrators of the attack outside Kabul International Airport. The attack killed at least 13 US military personnel and dozens of Afghans.

In a speech at the White House on Thursday, Biden said: “We will not be intimidated by terrorists, and we will not let them stop our mission. We will continue to evacuate.”

Biden stated that he has ordered military commanders to “draw up an action plan against the assets, leadership and facilities of the Khorasan branch of the Islamic State (ISIS-K).” He added that the United States will “make a powerful and precise counterattack” at the time and place chosen by Washington.

He said: “We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will follow through and make you pay.”

Biden made these remarks, arguably the darkest day since he took office 8 months. The severe bloodshed has exacerbated the chaos of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and made it difficult to evacuate vulnerable civilians before the deadline for complete withdrawal on August 31.

But the American president boldly defended his decision to end the war that started after the 9/11 attacks and lasted for 20 years.

“I never thought that we should sacrifice American lives and try to establish a democratic government in Afghanistan.” He said, “Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to end this 20-year war.”
