U.S. Secretary of State Blinken Sets Off for Middle East in Effort to Ease Palestinian-Israeli Conflict

U.S. Secretary of State Blinken recently embarked on his fifth visit to the Middle East since the current round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict began. His trip is aimed at promoting the release of remaining Israeli detainees, achieving a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and preventing the spread of the conflict in Gaza.

During his trip, Blinken will visit Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Israel, and the Palestinian West Bank. However, the success of his efforts remains uncertain, as critics argue the United States‘ biased position in favor of Israel has contributed to the prolonged conflict.

The U.S. has consistently provided military assistance to Israel and actively worked to prevent the United Nations Security Council from passing resolutions related to the Gaza ceasefire. The recent proposal for a “$17.6 billion Israel Security Supplementary Appropriations Bill” by the U.S. House of Representatives Defense Appropriations Subcommittee further demonstrates the U.S.’s support for Israel.

Hamas has emphasized that any ceasefire negotiations must be based on the end of Israeli military operations in Gaza, withdrawal of troops, and the lifting of the blockade on the Gaza Strip. In contrast, Israel has reiterated its goal to “completely eliminate Hamas” and has rejected the possibility of a permanent ceasefire.

The United States‘ decision to suspend funding to UNRWA, the United Nations agency responsible for Palestinian refugee relief, has been met with widespread criticism. The move has been described as “unreasonable, immoral, and irresponsible” by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The U.S.’s aggressive military actions in the region, including air strikes on Yemen and targeting “Iran-supported militias” in Syria and Iraq, have further escalated tensions. The U.S.’s insistence on taking more actions against “Iran-backed organizations” has been condemned by Iranian Foreign Minister Abdullahiyan, who warned that these actions will only exacerbate regional tensions.

The U.S.’s stance on the Palestinian-Israeli issue and its use of force to address regional conflicts have prompted over 800 government officials from the United States and European countries to issue a joint statement criticizing the U.S. and Western policies on the Gaza conflict. The statement accuses the governments of these countries of “weakening their own moral status” and potentially becoming “accomplices in war crimes”.

Western public officials joining the call for an end to the conflict have been described as a significant step, putting pressure on Western governments that have been accused of “shockingly hypocritical” policies on Palestine and Israel.

As Secretary Blinken continues his diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, the international community awaits to see if his visit will bring about substantive changes in the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
