The Boeing 737 MAX 9 passenger aircraft has been ordered to be temporarily grounded for safety inspections after an incident involving an Alaska Airlines plane. This directive was first issued by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and has since been adopted by the European Aviation Safety Agency as well.
Following an incident on January 5 involving an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9, the FAA has ordered the temporary grounding of these aircraft for safety inspections. The incident, which occurred shortly after takeoff from Portland, Oregon, resulted in an emergency landing but no casualties. Photos taken by passengers on the plane showed damage to the cabin, and the FAA records showed that the plane was certified just over two months ago.
In response, the European Aviation Safety Agency has adopted the FAA’s emergency airworthiness directive and has required operators of Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft to comply with the grounding and inspection orders before entering European airspace. The British aviation safety regulator has also issued a similar directive. Additionally, airlines such as Copa Airlines, Aeromexico, and Turkish Airlines have announced grounding inspections of their Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft.
Boeing, the manufacturer of the aircraft, has expressed regret for the impact of the incident and has agreed to support the regulatory agencies’ request for immediate inspections of Boeing 737 MAX 9 models with the same configuration as the affected aircraft.
According to reports, there are currently 218 Boeing 737 MAX 9 passenger aircraft in service worldwide, with most operated by Alaska Airlines and United Airlines.
