Newcastle United won this Saturday 0-2 on their visit to Fulham, with goals from Sean Longstaff and Dan Burn, and qualified for the round of 16 of the FA Cup, a round where Brighton & Hove Albion and the Leicester City thanks to their respective victories against Sheffield United (2-5) and Birmingham City (3-0). At Craven Cottage, the ‘magpies’ took the lead shortly before half-time with a left-footed shot from Longstaff, on a semi-volley, after a commotion in the area following a corner. And precisely another corner kick made it 0-2 (min.61), with Burn taking advantage of the goalkeeper’s rebound from point-blank range after a header from Sven Botman at the far post. This harvest made a Newcastle smile, which has in this tournament a balm for its irregular performance in other competitions, anchored in the middle zone of the Premier League and also eliminated cruelly, and prematurely, in the so-called ‘group of death’ of the Champions League. In the round of 16 of this FA Cup they will share objectives with Brighton, whose win at Bramall Lane, including a hat-trick by João Pedro, cut short Sheffield United’s budding comeback. Leicester also advanced to the round, resolving their duel with Birmingham at home during the second half; Jamie Vardy, Yunus Akgün and Dennis Praet scored the goals. Likewise, Luton Town, who beat Everton 0-1, and Maidstone, who beat Ipswich Town 1-2, are still alive in this tournament. However, Leeds United drew at home (1-1) against Plymouth Argyle and therefore there will be a replay to decide who passes this round.
