1. FC Cologne – Bayer 04 Leverkusen 0:2 (0:1)
With ten games left in the current season, Leverkusen is in a very good position. With a 2-0 win against relegation-threatened Cologne, the team led by coach Xabi Alonso consolidated their lead in the table to ten points. Despite the defeat, Cologne can still hope to stay in the Bundesliga.
Leverkusen controlled the game early on, but both teams were able to create individual chances. However, Cologne’s Jan Thielmann received a red card after just 14 minutes for a foul on Granit Xhaka, which is why Cologne had to play outnumbered early on. They were initially able to compensate for this well by making the spaces narrow; Leverkusen also often acted too awkwardly. Jeremie Frimpong managed to take the lead (38th).

The second half wasn’t really confident either, Cologne held strong against the league leaders, who didn’t want to come up with much. With Alejandro Grimaldo’s 2-0 win, Bayer were ultimately able to win the game. It was also a bit of luck that Leverkusen was able to move further ahead in the table thanks to Bayern’s 2-2 draw against Freiburg. With ten games left, the first championship title is now very close; seven wins would certainly be enough. Cologne is now eight points behind in 15th place, meaning it is still possible to stay in the Bundesliga.
TSG 1899 Hoffenheim – SV Werder Bremen 2:1 (2:0)
Hoffenheim celebrated its first home win of the year with a 2-1 win against Werder Bremen. Maximilian Beier scored twice for TSG and moved his team three points ahead of Bremen in seventh place in the table.
Hoffenheim opened up gaps in Bremen’s defense early on and so Beier was able to score 1-0 after a corner in the 14th minute. Bremen couldn’t get the fast scorer under control and so the Hoffenheim offensive created several chances. Bremen itself was able to increase its offensive tempo afterwards, but was unable to score a goal. Instead, Beier scored shortly before the break to make it 2-0 (44th).

Beier remained extremely dangerous in the second half and created good opportunities, some of which he narrowly missed. Hoffenheim’s Marius Bülter was shown a yellow-red card after repeated foul play (73′), but even the majority could no longer endanger Hoffenheim’s victory. Skelly Alvero’s goal ultimately came too late (90+2). Bremen now have to play against Dortmund next week, while Hoffenheim is a guest at Eintracht Frankfurt.
