Il president Filipino Ferdinand Marcos Jr arrived in helicopter at the concert of Coldplay north of the capital Manila, last Friday. The controversy took little time to explode with enraged citizens accusing Marcos Jr of waste public funds. The flight would have been necessary because in the Philippine Arena, where the concert was held, there were over 40 thousand people who “enthusiastically attended the performance, with consequent and unexpected complications for the traffica potential threat to the security of our president.”
Security chief Morales asked for public understanding, because supporting “these measures is crucial to maintaining the safety and the well-being of our nation’s leadership”, in fact the Philippine Arena is located on the outskirts and therefore about 40 minutes by car from the presidential palace: without any traffic jams, with public transport the same journey can take from one to two hours.
The city’s traffic is indeed enormous: the capital is classified as the one with the worse traffic. Activist Renato Reyes said we are “facing a tremendous transport crisis which caused terrible traffic and nightmarish commutes for ordinary people” and then points out the president’s gesture as “a grave insult to millions of Filipino commuters”. In fact the TomTom Traffic Index 2023 named Metro Manila as the slowest metro line, in a survey of 387 cities in 55 countries: in Manila, on average, it takes 25 minutes to travel 10 km. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, during the show he joked about traffic in Manila and thanked the audience for their willpower: “We saw some traffic. I think Manila’s traffic ranks first in the world. Thank you for making every effort to be here.”
