According to the Federal Constitution, electoral registration and voting are optional for young people aged 16 and 17. However, since 2021, a rule from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) started to allow 15-year-olds to obtain their voter registration card.

A TSE Resolution No. 23,659/2021which deals with the management of voter registration and other election services, establishes that voter registration is optional for young people aged 15, from the moment they reach that age.

With the electoral card at 15 years old, can I vote this year?

Only if the young person turns 16 by voting day. Otherwise, no. The first round of the 2024 Municipal Elections will take place on October 6th.

In other words, even with a voter registration card, 15-year-olds will only be able to vote, optionally, if they turn 16 by election day.

According to the Constitution, in addition to young people aged 16 and 17, electoral registration and voting are optional for illiterate people and those over 70 years of age. In Brazil, voting is only mandatory for those over 18 years of age.

How do I get my voter registration card?

Although it is possible to apply for voter registration online, if you prefer, you can go directly to the electoral office closest to your residence to register to vote.

What is the deadline to obtain a voter registration card?

The deadline is May 8th. After this date, the electoral register will be closed for new registrations and other procedures.
