The accident occurred near the Kurfürstendamm, the popular Berlin shopping street
One person died and at least eight were injured after a vehicle hit pedestrians in central Berlin. Berlin police spokesman Martin Dams said the incident occurred near the popular Kurfürstendamm shopping street in the western part of the German capital. The driver of the vehicle was arrested. It is unclear whether this was an accident or whether the driver intentionally hit the crowd.
The incident took place near Breitscheid Square, a few steps away from Gedaechtniskirche, the church damaged in World War II which is one of the most famous monuments in Berlin, the same area where in 2016 an extremist carried out a vehicle attack on a market of Christmas, causing 13 deaths. The man was driving a small Renault.
According to the firefighters, the report took place at 10.30. There are over 60 fire brigade units on site. Several ambulances have also arrived to help the injured, some of whom are in serious condition.
