China promotes a musical inspired by “La La Land” to disprove Uighur abuse

by admin

Is called The wings of the songs the musical distributed in Chinese cinemas as part of state propaganda on the Uyghurs, a persecuted Muslim minority in the province of Xinjiang. According to the state newspaper Global Times, the film was inspired by the success of La La Land.

In the trailer of the film you can see couples in love, boys dancing and singing against the backdrop of majestic landscapes. The musical, writes theAfp, omits any reference to surveillance cameras and security checks imposed on Uyghurs. Just as any mention of Islam, mosques or veiled women is deleted. One of the protagonists is a young Uyghur with a clean-shaven face who toasts with a beer in one scene.

According to complaints from human rights groups, more than one million Uighurs have been locked up in re-education camps and there are cases of forced sterilization of women. Last March the United States, the EU, Great Britain and Canada jointly passed sanctions against Chinese officials involved in the repression of Uighurs. Several international brands have given up on Chinese cotton in order not to use the fruit of Uighur forced labor.
