The national ice hockey team will also take to the ice at the World Cup with the Swiss coat of arms on their chest.

There is currently a standstill between the federal government and the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation. The background is a dispute over the use of the Swiss coat of arms on the “Eisgenossen” jersey. The ice hockey national team used this at past world championships without federal approval. The current law has been in force since 2017. The Federal Administrative Court is now dealing with the matter.

There are no new developments in this matter, the ice hockey association said when asked by CH Media. One thing is certain: the players will wear the coat of arms at the Hockey World Cup. Those responsible have already confirmed this earlier. After the coat of arms dispute became public, the association received “a lot of support”.

Also from politics. National Councilor Matthias Aebischer (SP/BE) and Councilor of States Damian Müller (FDP/LU) have each submitted proposals for a special regulation to be set up for Swiss national teams. These are likely to use the Swiss coat of arms in the future. To date, the Coat of Arms Protection Act prohibits its use.

Politics is discussed in the summer session

In order to be able to use the coat of arms – which according to the law is a “Swiss cross in a triangular shield” – an exceptional permit is required. Victorinox and SAC-Hütten, among others, have one of these. In the case of the Swiss national ice hockey team, negotiations took a long time, but in the end the federal government and association did not find a solution.

In the coming summer session, Parliament – certainly at least the Council of States – will now decide on the proposals. But then the final has already been played in Prague. The chances are good that the politicians will make an exception for the national team. But the association isn’t worried about that. “Our focus is on sport and we want to have a successful World Cup,” writes the association. Certainly with the Swiss coat of arms on the chest.

Without being completely convincing, Switzerland lives up to its role as favorite at the start of the World Cup. Coach Patrick Fischer’s team beat Norway 5-2 in Prague.

The Swiss were responsible for the difference with three goals in the middle third. In the 25th minute, defender Romain Loeffel gave the favorites the lead for the second time with a shot from the blue line, 2-1, with World Cup newcomer Ken Jäger being credited with an assist. Four minutes later, Sven Senteler increased the score to 3-1 with his first World Cup goal after great work from captain Roman Josi from the slot. In the 34th minute, Gaëtan Haas intercepted a pass in the middle zone and fed it to Tristan Scherwey, who beat Norwegian keeper Jonas Arntzen at the second attempt to make it 4-1.
