The presidents of Colombia and Venezuela, Gustavo Petro and Nicolás Maduro, respectively, have joined forces to call on Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa to recognize the political asylum granted by Mexico to former Vice President Jorge Glas. This comes after Glas was forcibly removed from the Mexican embassy in Quito on April 5, prompting Mexico to file a complaint with the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

In a virtual meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) on April 16, the leaders of various countries expressed their support for Glas and called for his reinstatement at the Mexican Embassy. Bolivian President Luis Arce also emphasized the need to monitor Glas’ health to prevent any irreparable damage.

Glas, who was serving a prison sentence for corruption charges, had sought asylum in Mexico and was awaiting safe passage out of Ecuador when he was arrested. Despite a court ruling declaring his detention inside the diplomatic premises as illegal and arbitrary, he remains imprisoned.

Colombian President Petro stressed the importance of upholding the right to asylum, while Venezuelan President Maduro demanded that Glas be returned to the Mexican Embassy to recover from alleged torture. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador responded to Ecuador’s actions by defending the right of asylum and emphasizing the need to protect those persecuted for political reasons.

The situation has escalated into a diplomatic dispute, with Mexico cutting ties with Ecuador and seeking justice through international legal channels. As the conflict continues, the fate of Jorge Glas remains uncertain, with leaders across Latin America urging for his release and recognition of his asylum status.
