Colombia, Italian tourist dies after a shark attack

An Italian tourist died in Colombia of injuries sustained following a shark attack. The incident occurred in the Colombian archipelago of San Andrés, in the Caribbean Sea, in the locality of Piscinita. The local authorities and media report it. The 56-year-old man, according to initial information originally from Roseto Degli Abruzzi, was swimming near a cliff that was not very popular with swimmers when he was suddenly bitten by the animal. Some people, attracted by the screams, ran and managed to retrieve it after he had struggled to reach the rocks. Admitted to hospital, the 56-year-old died of bleeding from a deep wound in his leg.

In a statement. the San Andrés Archipelago Sustainable Development Agency specifies that, after learning about the incident through social networks, it immediately ordered a joint operation with the Navy, the Coast Guard, the National Police and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. For its part, the San Andrés Tourism Secretariat has communicated to the media some personal details of the Italian victim, omitting the surname, mistakenly or purposely confusing it with the city of origin, Roseto degli Abruzzi.

The note communicated the name (Antonio), the surname confused with the city, the age (56 years), the date of birth (30/03/1966) and the nationality (Italian). Commenting on the incident, the body recalls that «thanks to 14 years of total protection of the marine environment in the area, the shark population has grown to become, according to recent scientific research, the second most important in the world. Based on the videos circulating on social media – it is said later – it was possible to identify that in the area of the fatal accident there were two large tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier), whose identification was confirmed by experts at national level “. The body then underlined that it had learned that “apparently a resident of the sector had warned of the presence of sharks in the water and recommended not to dive, but was not listened to”.
