Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has spoken out against the actions of Russian peacekeepers in the Nagorno Karabakh region following Azerbaijan’s takeover last September. Mirzoyan accused Russian forces of failing to prevent ethnic cleansing in the region and highlighted the strained relationship between Armenia and Russia.
In an interview in Buenos Aires, Mirzoyan expressed concerns about the lack of intervention by Russian peacekeepers during the conflict in Nagorno Karabakh. He emphasized the importance of upholding international obligations and criticized the breach of the ceasefire agreement by Azerbaijan.
Amidst these tensions, Armenia has been strengthening ties with the European Union and NATO. Mirzoyan highlighted the cooperation with the EU in monitoring borders and expressed interest in expanding cooperation with NATO. However, he clarified that Armenia does not have intentions to join NATO but participates in peace missions with the Alliance.
Regarding relations with neighboring countries, Mirzoyan emphasized the need for a peace treaty with Azerbaijan and normalization of relations with Turkey. He expressed concerns about Azerbaijan’s intentions for peace negotiations and outlined differences in key issues, such as mutual recognition of borders.
In addition, Mirzoyan addressed the reopening of a railway line connecting China and Europe, highlighting disagreements with Azerbaijan’s demands for military presence and lack of customs control. He stressed the importance of maintaining sovereignty and fair conditions in any agreements regarding the railway network.
Furthermore, Mirzoyan discussed Armenia’s decision to freeze its participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) military alliance, citing the organization’s failure to respond to Armenia’s request for political and diplomatic intervention during the conflict in the South Caucasus.
Overall, Armenia is navigating complex geopolitical dynamics in the region, balancing relationships with Russia, the West, and neighboring countries while seeking to ensure security and stability for its citizens.
