OUAGADOUGOU- There has been a coup in Burkina Faso, according to information conformed by local media and Reuters. President Roch Kabore he has been arrested. The rumors of a possible coup had been circulating since yesterday morning, when the military mutinied in various barracks in the country, including those in the capital Ouagadougou.
The soldiers asked Kaboré to sign his resignation within 72 hours and in the next few hours they will issue an official statement. Several bullet-riddled armored vehicles from the Presidential Fleet were spotted near the president’s residence on Monday morning. One was stained with blood. Residents of the president’s neighborhood reported heavy gunfire during the night.
The government had denied Sunday rumors that a coup was underway as prolonged gunfire rang for hours from several military camps, with rioting soldiers demanding more support in the fight against Islamic militants.
In recent months, frustration has increased in the West African country due to the frequent killings of civilians and soldiers by militants, some of whom have ties to the Islamic State and al Qaeda.
