Cuba Stands Out as Third Most Popular Destination for Asturians Abroad

Official data has revealed that Cuba is the third country that welcomes the most Asturians abroad, following Argentina and Mexico. The number of Asturians living abroad has increased by 2.9% last year, reaching a total of 142,275 descendants from the region of Spain.

According to the Asturian Society of Economic and Industrial Studies (Sadei), the majority of Asturians abroad are located in America, accounting for 77% of the total, followed by Europe with 21%.

Leading the list of countries hosting Asturians abroad is Argentina, with 34,362 residents, followed by Mexico with 25,077, and Cuba with 16,822. Combined, these three countries host almost 54% of Spaniards residing abroad registered in Asturias.

The data from last year shows that Cuba is second among nations with new registrations of Asturians, with 1,474 individuals. This increase in the number of Asturians abroad has been significant since 2009, with a 74.8% increase over the years.

The majority of Asturians living abroad fall between the ages of 16 and 64, with a significant portion being over the age of 85. The gender distribution is relatively equal, with 49% men and 51% women.

This evaluation was conducted using the Register of Spaniards Resident Abroad, which tracks the registrations of Spaniards living outside of Spain. The data reveals that 79% of residents registered in Asturias were born abroad, while 19% were born in the Principality.
