Tereza de Moura Guedes was 89 years old and had been ill for a few days. “It’s not pleasant to be sick. But this is ‘a wandering thing’, you have to take it with you”, wrote the retired university professor, 10 days ago, on social media.
Born in Torres Vedras, Maria Tereza Sousa de Moura Guedes graduated in Romantic Philology in 1982. She completed her master’s degree in 1987 in French Literature. And she completed her PhD in Literature (French Literature) in 1998.
Maria Tereza was invited in 1984 to perform teaching duties at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon,
in the Department of Romance Literatures.
In addition to being a teacher, she was a literary critic. In 2002 she was appointed director-general of Higher Education.
José Eduardo Moniz took to his Instagram page to pay tribute to his mother-in-law.
“Tereza was an unusual person. I have always admired her for her sensitivity, her passion for Literature, her ability to believe that dreams are only impossible until they become reality”, she begins by saying.
“What can we say about a woman who was able to defy the codes of destiny and venture through the thorny paths of the University, until she received her doctorate, with enormous distinction, indifferent to prejudices and after having already raised three children? Blood and nicknames were never an excuse or protection. She fought to achieve what her will dictated and what her heart determined. For everything I saw her live, she was a true feminist. Free, sassy and cultured,” she continues.
“I will miss his wit, his pointed humor and the affection with which he liked the Portuguese language to be treated. Yes, today, I feel poorer”, he adds.
