Defensive mistakes cost Bayern their victory
FC Bayern cannot get beyond a draw in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid. Thomas Tuchel’s team reveals weaknesses, especially defensively.
FC Bayern missed a good starting position in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final. Coach Thomas Tuchel’s team couldn’t get past 2-2 (0-1) against Real Madrid despite being in the lead for a while. The second leg takes place next Wednesday at the Bernabeu. A win is needed to fulfill the great hope of the final on June 1st in London – if necessary in a penalty shootout.

The Munich team defied a deficit at halftime: Vinicius Junior had given the Madrilenians the lead in the 24th minute, preceded by a dream pass from Toni Kroos, which delighted fans and experts. However, Min-jae Kim allowed herself to be lured far too far out of the chain.
Leroy Sané brought Munich back into the game with an individual action and his first competitive goal in six months (53rd), a few minutes later Lucas Vazquez fouled Jamal Musiala in the penalty area and a penalty was awarded. Harry Kane stayed cool from the point (57th).
25 minutes later there was also a penalty at the other end: Kim Min-jae brought down Rodrygo in the penalty area, Vinicus Junior equalized (83′).

“There are four halves to play, we lost the first, won the second. The first one wasn’t so good, the second one was good,” Tuchel analyzed on Prime Video after the game. For him it is “still a 50:50 game”.
Real star Kroos explained: “I wouldn’t have liked it to be 2-2 at half-time, but of course I would have liked it ten minutes before the end. I think it’s performance-based. We are of course convinced that we can progress at home.”
The south curve dedicated the hit to their “Emperor” Franz Beckenbauer. “As a conductor on the field, known throughout the world!” read a huge banner. But on the pitch, Kapellmeister Kroos reigned supreme for a long time in the 27th edition of the “mother” of all premier class classics. The attitude was right at Bayern – thanks to Tuchel, as sports director Max Eberl emphasized: His speech was “very to the point”. The team, Eberl emphasized, had to “give up respect for the royal coat of arms” – but that didn’t seem to be there at the beginning.

“We feel like we can hurt them,” Tuchel said. And that’s how his team played. Sane, like Musiala in the starting line-up after Tuchel’s “last-minute decision”, fired the first dangerous shot after just 40 seconds.
Real, with defense chief Antonio Rüdiger, kept a polite distance and the Munich team had chances almost every minute. Tuchel still seemed dissatisfied, repeatedly intervened and quarreled. Colleague Carlo Ancelotti followed the proceedings stoically, usually with his hands in his pockets. He probably suspected what was coming.
Break in the Bayern game
Min-Jae Kim, who was replacing the injured Matthijs de Ligt, was lured out of the center and after a sweet pass from Kroos, Vinicius ran alone towards the hesitant newcomer: the Brazilian scored ice-cold from eleven meters. “Toni has an open ball. There is a rule for defense: Don’t let yourself be lured!” said expert Matthias Sammer on Prime Video about the mistake.
Now there was a break in the Munich game, only Kane came close to equalizing with a free kick (42nd) before the break. But after the break, the German record champions showed their best Champions League face. Even Kroos, who rushed up, couldn’t stop Sane’s solo run with a bang. Shortly afterwards, Lucas Vazquez gave up on Musiala: Kane scored safely from the spot.
Ancelotti tried to give the hard-fought game another twist in his old place of work: He took down Kroos and the rather inconspicuous former Dortmund player Jude Bellingham (76th) and brought on veteran Luka Modric, among others. But Bayern fought against the equalizer with full commitment – like Neuer against Vinicius (79th). Then Vinicius Junior took the chance from the penalty spot after a foul by Kim on Rodrygo.
