Iraqi National Team closing the group phase 2023 Asian Cup perfectly. This was after Iraq won the five-goal drama against Vietnam with a score of 3-2.
In the third match of Group D which was held at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, Wednesday (24/1/2024) evening WIB, Iraq, which had already confirmed qualification, still fielded its best team.
Vietnam surprised when they took a 1-0 lead in the first half through Bui Hoang Viet Anh’s goal in the 42nd minute. Bui cleverly tipped the ball into the penalty box without Iraqi goalkeeper Ahmed Basil Fadhil Al Fadhli being able to block it.

Vietnam then lost one player Khuat Van Khang who received a red card in the fourth minute of first half injury time.
Two minutes after the break, Iraq equalized the score through Rebin Sulaka who poked the ball in the penalty box towards Filip Nguyen’s goal.
Iraq went back to winning 2-1 through Aymen Hussein who came on as a substitute in the second half. In the 73rd minute, Hussein headed his partner’s cross from the left side.
Vietnam managed to equalize the score again in the 91st minute through Nguyen Quang Hai’s flick following his partner’s header. Iraq then emerged victorious after being awarded a penalty in the 12th minute of second half injury time.
Hussein, who was the executor, successfully outwit Nguyen to make Iraq win 3-2 and finish as group winners with nine points. Vietnam is bottom with zero points from three matches.
