Five people, who were in a cafe in Monforte, were run over on the night of Monday, January 29, after a vehicle allegedly entered the establishment intentionally.
According to the Alto Alentejo Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command, three men and one woman were assisted at the scene. One seriously injured person, the 38-year-old driver of the vehicle, and a minor were transported to Dr. José Maria Grande hospital, in Portalegre.
The suspicions are that the driver intentionally entered the establishment with the vehicle, after having been denied drinks and because he was allegedly already under the influence of alcohol. In addition to running over five people, it partially destroyed the cafe. It is also known that one of the injured is the commander of the Monforte Volunteer Fire Department, who was at the scene.
The Judiciary Police were called to the scene to investigate the incident.
The alert for the incident was given at 9:44 pm, and 19 operatives were mobilized to the location, including firefighters from Monforte and Arronches and GNR soldiers, supported by eight vehicles.
